Despite the low family income and the one-child policy, most families still raise 3 to 6 children. In the past, a lot of children could not afford the school fees and missed school. Since September 2001, the Government of Guangdong Province has granted subsides for school fees to the poorest families and solves the attendance problem up to Secondary Three. Nevertheless, only a few lucky ones can afford to attend high school in Qing Yuan.

In March 2008, an Island School parent donated two thousand pairs of shoes to the children here. These shoes have thickened sole to cater for the need of the children who have to walk a long way to school.
